BIM Architecture: A Petal Falling into an Oasis by Chengdu Direct Architectural Design

BIM Architecture | A Petal Falling into an Oasis/Chengdu Direct Architectural Design

01 A “petal” gracefully falls into the oasis, seamlessly integrating with the building. This installation transforms into a delicate petal resting amidst the lush greenery of the city, infusing the forested commercial area with a romantic ambiance. Its edges are soft and smooth, forming a light and agile shape that adapts fluidly to its surroundings. Positioned at the entrance of Building B’s commercial district in Luhu · Lufang, Chengdu, this petal warmly welcomes every resident and visitor.

The dynamic interaction between the installation and its environment, as well as with people, unfolds at the heart of the space. A charming cross-water feature breathes life and romance into the piece, lending it a spiritual essence. The water’s reflective surface mirrors the installation’s base, enhancing the petal’s graceful form. Inside, the design maintains a consistent height, creating cohesive social areas that foster comfort and connection. The undulating exterior surface promotes a lively, dynamic atmosphere, while the outward-facing social zones encourage interaction. Varying heights invite diverse behaviors—visitors can sit, lie down, lean, or recline on the petals. Children add an element of playfulness, discovering new ways to engage with the petals.

The design process begins with the “hidden” structure of the installation, supported by six mirror bases strategically placed where the petals “fall.” This clever approach visually merges the bases with the petals, reinforcing the impression of petals floating effortlessly. Beyond the bases, curved steel keels provide structural support. These keels connect to the lightbox components via a buckle system, ensuring stability while completely concealing the framework between the wood and stainless steel lightboxes.

02 The parameter design and CNC construction of this unique petal involve 300 varied lengths of wood and stainless steel lightboxes. Each stainless steel lightbox connects to the keels at different angles, resulting in 600 unique connector forms. Throughout production, node design, data management, CNC machine input/output, and installation showcase the seamless fusion of technology and artistry.
