The central green heart of the city seamlessly integrates with the commercial area of Suhewan Central Park. The design transforms the ground floor into a park, while visually minimizing the entrance to the underground level to emphasize its role as a public space. Greenery is thoughtfully incorporated into the underground area, bringing the feel of the above-ground park into the subterranean commercial environment.
Plants play a symbolic role in honoring the site’s historical structures. The former pillar points of Tianhou Palace are represented as lawn areas, while the skylight and lawn in Shenyu Li Square outline the footprint of the traditional Shikumen architecture. The skylight allows natural light to fill the interior during the day and, at night, interior lighting shines through the ground, creating a unique atmosphere.
Originally, Suhewan consisted of several disconnected plots separated by a wide roadway, making it difficult to navigate between them. To create a seamless park experience, the landscape design employs a unified aesthetic language and introduces pedestrian overpasses that visually and functionally connect the different areas.
In dynamic cities like Shanghai, innovation is constant. Open spaces such as Suhewan are designed to accommodate future possibilities, acting as lively urban stages that foster creativity and social engagement. Despite being less than a year old, this park has quickly become a hub for art and creative activities, featuring thoughtfully designed open areas that support diverse uses.
