The JJM R&D Headquarters stands as a new landmark in Changsha’s Meixi Lake area. Commissioned in 2014, UNIT began design work on the project. The first phase was operational by 2016, and the second phase was completed in 2023, marking a decade-long development. The entire complex is now fully functional.

JJM is recognized as the first Chinese company to successfully develop domestically produced GPU chips and implement them on a large engineering scale. It is also a global leader in high-tech innovation. UNIT’s Chief Architect Yang Moyang described the design vision: “We aimed for the architecture to reflect and strengthen JJM’s corporate values, seamlessly connecting with the beautiful natural surroundings, creating a landmark that belongs both to JJM and the Meixi Lake area.”

Situated at the entrance of the Meixi Lake New District, the project enjoys a prime location backed by the Yuelu Mountains and overlooking the lakefront. The site boasts excellent landscape and ecological resources.
The complex consists of three buildings: Buildings 1 and 2 serve as research and development offices, while Building 3 functions as a VIP reception center. These structures surround an open, irregularly shaped courtyard that invites natural light from multiple angles and directions. This courtyard fosters a harmonious dialogue between the architecture and the adjacent mountain range.
This unique courtyard also acts as a bridge, connecting the lakeside scenery with the mountainous backdrop, softening the impact of the large building volumes on the natural landscape.

To further minimize the visual impact of the large building mass on the surrounding landscape, the design integrates the laboratory, staff restaurant, and other spaces on the first and second floors into a dark gray volume shaped like a mountain.
Above this, the main spaces on floors three through six are housed in two white volumes that appear to float, creating a sense of lightness. These upper white volumes feature 15 modular window sections of equal height but varying width, arranged in a gradient to produce an elegant, dynamic facade.
The building’s form is lively yet refined, making a lasting impression. With a focus on flexible and efficient function, ecological sustainability, and human-centered design, the architecture supports future research and new office models.
The dynamic facade and gentle gradation harmonize the building with the lake and mountain views, ensuring it stands out as a distinctive and recognizable feature among Meixi Lake’s office buildings.
