Following the design of the Techcombank headquarters in Hanoi, Foster+Partners has completed a new office tower for the bank in Ho Chi Minh City. This 21-story building’s design focuses on two key elements: first, a flexible conceptual layout accommodating various tenants and uses; second, an environmentally conscious approach featuring a self-shading facade tailored for the tropical climate. The project aims to achieve LEED Platinum certification.
The tower’s floor area is dictated by the site boundaries and required setback distances. It is situated on a double-decker plot, featuring two main entrances: the primary entrance facing Le Duan Boulevard, and a secondary entrance on Nguyen Du Street. Vertically, the building is composed of two blocks, with the core zone positioned behind the tower adjacent to a nearby hotel. The recessed area between these blocks serves as a logistics space for staff.
The design promotes a bright and inviting atmosphere through three central courtyards of varying heights. The first atrium spans from the ground floor up to the ninth floor. The second and third atriums begin on the eleventh and fourteenth floors respectively, extending to the full height of the tower. These open spaces encourage visual connectivity and feature unique meeting pods, fostering a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture.
The floor slabs feature serrated edges designed according to the sun’s angle. This orientation allows the building to shade itself effectively, creating a textured facade. The sun-facing sides of these edges are equipped with sunshades, while the opposite sides utilize transparent glass since they face away from direct sunlight, offering clear views of the city and surrounding landscape.
