For technology companies, the ideal office environment should offer employees a sense of autonomy and freedom, fostering true creativity through an open atmosphere.

As trailblazers of the future, technology companies explore humanity’s next frontiers, and their headquarters have evolved into showcases of cutting-edge office architecture.
Yushi Technology, a leader in China’s video surveillance industry and among the top three in market share nationwide, commissioned Goa Elephant Design in 2017 to design their new headquarters. The goal was to create a “scientific research and production complex” that provides optimal conditions for the Yushi Hangzhou Research Institute and Trial Production Center, supporting the company’s growth through innovation.

Embracing the Park
The site is located in the Binjiang IoT Industrial Park on the south bank of the Qiantang River in Hangzhou’s Binjiang District. It borders an urban park at the southern end of the park’s green landscape axis to the west.

The park’s nearly circular shape is echoed in the building’s design through smooth, large arcs. Rather than a conventional high-rise tower, the design employs three volumes: one horizontal, one vertical, and a base, creating a harmonious dialogue with the urban park. The horizontally extended, curved façade embraces the park, establishing a welcoming posture.

A crescent-shaped plaza is positioned between the building and the park, offering continuous walking paths for employees and enhancing the urban connection. The podium frames the park landscape, while a curved elevated corridor blends interior and exterior spaces, allowing greenery and architecture to interpenetrate.

A Micro City
The “one horizontal, one vertical, and one base” volumes correspond to the 22-story administrative office tower, the 8-story research and development center, and the ground-level service strip, respectively. The design responds to Yushi Technology’s functional and hierarchical requirements by integrating diverse spatial modules into an organic and efficient complex.
The headquarters includes numerous shared spaces, fostering an open atmosphere and varied daily experiences for approximately 5,000 employees. Corridors and atriums serve as city streets, connecting research, production, conference, and training areas, providing a calm pause amid busy workflows. Beyond company control, many shared spaces are accessible to the public, making the building an organic miniature city—self-contained yet seamlessly integrated with its surroundings.

The Building’s Super Artery
As a high-density complex, optimizing mobility for large crowds is crucial. The building’s base features a strip-like pedestrian system composed of an elevated corridor and a shared atrium, functioning as a “super artery” that greatly enhances circulation efficiency throughout the building.

The 120-meter-long, 7-meter-wide curved elevated corridor connects entrances and exits of the R&D area, allowing employees and visitors quick access to various parts of the building. It also serves as a relaxing walkway to the outdoor plaza, offering a pleasant space to wait or linger.

The shared atrium extends in a strip from the basement to the third floor, linking fitness centers, libraries, cafes, retail outlets, cafeterias, and underground parking. This creates a convenient pedestrian path that eases congestion during lunch and commuting hours.
The atrium also serves as the building’s most vibrant area. To foster a relaxed and open atmosphere, the architect incorporated a large skylight to bring in natural light, open staircases at both ends to animate the space with movement, and transparent façades to encourage visual interaction.

Innovation Incubator
Innovation thrives on idea exchange. The R&D center’s floor area spans 5,000 square meters, providing an open, flexible workspace for researchers. A crescent-shaped atrium floods the space with sunlight and views, while a surrounding Z-shaped staircase facilitates vertical circulation and promotes interaction across floors.
The approximately 28-meter-tall steel columns integrate with the skylight roof structure, enhancing spatial purity. The glass curtain wall is modularized at 900mm intervals, matching the steel framework to ensure a clean and cohesive façade.

A New Image for Yushi Technology
The headquarters presents distinct façades to different city views. The south and east sides face main roads, featuring a regular square box shape that aligns with the urban fabric, while the west side, facing the park, displays dynamic layers of large arcs. The building combines geometric forms with details that convey rationality, simplicity, and precision.
