Funerals are deeply emotional events often accompanied by sadness and reflection. Cemeteries, as the places where we say our final goodbyes, can evoke feelings of fear and emptiness. What kind of architecture can dispel this fear, withstand the weight of emotions and memories, and create a space for contemplation and remembrance? We need a structure that embraces sorrow and loss—not by leaving something behind, but by offering a space that encourages us to confront the past.

This cemetery holds 70,000 memories—each representing an irreplaceable loss and unhealable regret.

The design features tilted city walls stacked together, forming a landscape embraced by surrounding mountains. Placing incense, candles, and flowers along the mountainside creates walls that invite introspection. These walls tilt skyward, reflecting sunlight and offering comfort in the face of fear. A skylight piercing the thick concrete gently casts light and hope into the courtyard.

A wall is a symbol of distance. Here, walls tilted at varying angles create a visual effect of gradual separation—not to isolate, but to offer space for contemplation. The rectangular entrance passage welcomes unpredictable weather, while the sloping walls channel winds from different directions. Located in Fengcheng, Hsinchu, the design and construction of this wind tower reflect the stories and memories of the city.
