The Tongxiang Red Culture Education Center is situated in Shufeng Village, Shimen Town, Tongxiang City. It comprises two main components: the Tongxiang Party History Museum and the Qinqiu Memorial Hall. Located approximately 3 kilometers north of Shimen Town’s urban area, the village is characterized by a dispersed settlement pattern, following rural roads and natural waterways. Being on the city’s outskirts, the quality of residents’ homes and municipal infrastructure requires systematic improvement.

The project is located in the southern part of Shufeng Village, an area rich in waterways and blessed with a superior natural environment. The site is surrounded by water on three sides, with a well-preserved ancient Qing Dynasty bridge on the eastern side. This bridge serves as a daily pedestrian link between the former factory and the village. Adjacent to the factory area’s east side are two casting workshops featuring open spaces and strong structural integrity. Early project evaluations determined these workshops would be converted into exhibition spaces.

The design concept centers on the original factory as a distinctive industrial building from a special historical period. Its large volume sharply contrasts with the surrounding residential buildings. As a former production site, the factory holds significant emotional value, having employed many local residents, making it a psychological and spatial anchor point within the rural landscape.

To meet exhibition requirements, the original single-story factory needed to be expanded into a three-story building. After careful consideration of structural reinforcement costs and construction timelines, the decision was made to demolish the original structure. However, to preserve its role as a spatial anchor, the design retains the original factory’s orientation and volume. This approach satisfies internal exhibition needs while maintaining the building’s external presence as a landmark that connects the site with its surroundings.

The village’s current spatial layout is relatively loose. To the southeast, naturally developed residential buildings line the river organically. The north features new rural residences with uniform and orderly forms, while the remaining vacant areas are farmland and related production facilities. There is no cohesive integration of various spatial elements in terms of overall form.

The architectural design aims to create an inward-facing enclosed space by utilizing the existing factory and connecting corridors within a spacious and loosely arranged spatial framework. This approach partially addresses the “crisis of entity” caused by the disconnection between individual buildings in the area, while also providing a communal, inward-oriented public space for the rural community.
