Many BIM professionals seek BIM-related certificates to enhance their career prospects, but with so many options available, it can be confusing to determine which certificate holds the most value in the market. Here, we provide a detailed explanation to clarify this issue.
Currently, there are two main types of certificates in the market: one is the graduation certificate issued by BIM training institutions, and the other is certification awarded through exams organized by government bodies and authoritative associations. The first type serves as proof of an individual’s participation in specific courses or assessments. In theory, any institution or individual can issue such certificates, which means their market value is relatively limited. Therefore, our focus will be on discussing the National BIM Level Examination and the National BIM Application Skills Examination.
Having previously written about the differences between these two exams, today we will analyze the overall BIM certification system.
Regarding the future of BIM certification, the National BIM Skill Level Examination clearly holds the leading position in terms of authority and recognition. Here is why:
The National BIM Skill Level Examination is now in its eighth phase and stands far ahead of other certifications concerning standardization, authority, and market influence. In contrast, the National BIM Application Skills Examination is still in its early stages. Many government projects, such as the Guangzhou Metro, currently use enterprise-level BIM. All related tenders require BIM certification, including the National BIM Skill Level Examination certificate issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. On the other hand, the certificate from the China Construction Education Association lacks universal recognition.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, along with the Chinese Society of Graphic Arts, enjoys an excellent reputation in certificate issuance and certification. Notably, the exam fees have remained affordable—only a few hundred yuan—and are not profit-driven. Conversely, the China Construction Education Association’s reputation in certificate issuance is widely known, as exemplified by the so-called “Eight Member Certificate.”
The National BIM Skill Level Examination implements strict quality control. Only institutions that have successfully conducted at least four sessions without issues receive authorization. No institution is granted qualification arbitrarily. Each authorized exam center undergoes rigorous evaluation, including review of instructor qualifications, use of genuine software, enrollment capacity, training experience, and data center facilities. All these factors must meet the most basic standards. In comparison, obtaining authorization from the China Construction Education Association appears to be easier.
It is also important to highlight the central role of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. Unlike other ministries such as the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development or the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, this ministry holds a core position. Historically, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security has been one of the six key ministries, while the others have often been marginalized. The ministry plays a key role in registration exams within the construction industry, reinforcing its strong position in the certification landscape.
In summary, when considering which BIM certificate offers the most value, the National BIM Level Examination stands out as the superior choice and should be the preferred option for BIM professionals.
