BIM Has Arrived: What Steps Should Cost Engineers Take Next?

In recent years, BIM has taken the global construction market by storm. After experiencing some initial ups and downs in our country, BIM is now gaining momentum and becoming increasingly influential. Because BIM can transform existing workflows and organizational structures, its impact is both wide-ranging and profound. Take cost engineers, for example—their ability to process and analyze big data is greatly enhanced by BIM, which improves efficiency, reduces errors, and even raises concerns about potential job replacement. But is this really the case? With BIM here to stay, what should cost engineers do?

Compared to China, BIM has been adopted much earlier in other countries, where cost control professionals have broader responsibilities across the entire project lifecycle. In contrast, cost personnel in China mainly focus on quantity takeoff tasks and are rarely involved in comprehensive project cost control. Since BIM can be applied throughout various stages of a building’s lifecycle, Chinese cost engineers currently utilize only a small portion of its capabilities, far from unlocking its full potential. This limited application creates the impression that cost engineers are dispensable once BIM is implemented, as data can be easily imported into BIM software. But is that really true? Here are my thoughts:

1. The road to BIM adoption is long and challenging

I acknowledge that BIM offers many advantages—visualization, big data integration and analysis, simulation, modularity, and more. However, fully implementing these benefits in China’s complex and well-established construction market remains a distant goal. It requires a lengthy period of adaptation. The journey to widespread BIM adoption in China is arduous, lengthy, and full of twists and turns, largely because we are entrenched in traditional construction practices. Those familiar with the industry will understand this challenge well.

2. Experience and mindset matter more than technology alone

While BIM is a concept that helps conceptualize and support existing cost workflows, cost work in China still heavily depends on the expertise and thinking of cost engineers. Theoretical knowledge cannot replace years of hands-on experience and meticulous attention to detail. Moreover, the scope of cost work in China has expanded beyond its traditional boundaries to include extensive communication among all project stakeholders. An outstanding cost engineer can influence overall project control through synchronized coordination of cost standards and engineering benefits, involving subtle trade-offs between various interests.

3. BIM software must align with cost management principles

Even with refined project management processes, the actual progress of a project may not always align perfectly with the BIM model. Cost engineers often have differing views on the accuracy of BIM models relative to real-world progress. As a result, they use various BIM software tools to develop diverse cost control methods. Therefore, BIM software itself must adhere to established cost theories and methodologies to effectively link models with cost data and enable accurate cost control.

4. The demand for versatile professionals is rising

Despite increasing specialization in construction engineering, BIM presents a fresh learning opportunity for cost engineers. They already have a thorough understanding of every project stage and the relationships between them. BIM can help them efficiently gather and store data, enhance their analytical abilities, speed up processing, and improve accuracy. So why not embrace it?

To conclude, this discussion highlights what cost engineers should do in the era of BIM. From the points above, it’s clear that BIM significantly impacts cost professionals. As for the rumors that BIM will replace cost engineers—I can only smile and say, “not quite.”
