Is It Possible to Learn Revit on Your Own?

Many newcomers to the BIM field often start with Revit, and for some, Revit is even their first introduction to BIM. Here, we have to give credit to Autodesk’s marketing strategy, which is quite effective. After discovering Revit, most people’s first instinct is to look for online tutorials and dive right in. Based on my own experience, today I want to discuss whether Revit can be effectively self-taught.

First, let’s consider the current trends. Personally, I see Revit and CAD as products from the same company. Although Revit was acquired by Autodesk and isn’t part of their original product line, the company’s investment and focus on Revit are just as strong as they are on CAD. In recent years, with the rise of virtual architecture and 3D design, Revit’s 3D modeling capabilities align perfectly with industry trends. Learning Revit is becoming an essential skill. Furthermore, the Revit suite includes modeling modules for architecture, structure, MEP, and other disciplines, covering most modeling needs in projects. Besides its convenient quantity calculation features (like for steel reinforcement), it’s quite reliable. Thanks to its powerful family (component) concept, even experts who specialize in creating family components can generate significant income. For these reasons, Revit remains one of the most popular BIM software choices in China.

Next, from an operational standpoint, since both Revit and CAD come from Autodesk, they share some similarities in their user interface and shortcut keys. This familiarity makes it easier for users with some CAD background to pick up Revit. Regarding Revit itself, it is a software that’s easy to start but challenging to master. Beginners, including those without any prior experience or architectural background, can learn the basics within three to five days, or up to ten days. However, becoming proficient—especially in building complex models and using parametric design concepts—requires significant effort and practice. So, for those who want to self-study, online videos and books can provide a good starting point, mainly for modeling basics. But this learning is often superficial. Compared to face-to-face instruction, the gap in understanding and efficiency is substantial.

Finally, when it comes to learning Revit independently, it demands a great deal of self-discipline and time management. Without fixed schedules, self-learners must arrange their study time carefully. BIM software learning is a practical process that requires hands-on practice and persistence. This approach suits students without work obligations, but for professionals balancing full-time jobs, squeezing in study time often leads to unsatisfactory results. When encountering difficulties, self-learners usually turn to online resources for help. However, if the problem isn’t resolved or the advice is misguided, it can not only delay progress but also create confusion. This is much less effective than direct, in-person teaching.

In face-to-face learning environments, students benefit from instructors’ explanations and shared experiences. Combining this guidance with their own work background, learners can identify relevant entry points tailored to their profession or job needs at different stages of the course. When problems arise, teachers can offer immediate solutions or share insights from their expertise, greatly improving learning efficiency. Additionally, success in self-learning depends heavily on the learner’s perseverance and commitment. In comparison, self-study generally falls short of the advantages offered by in-person teaching.

So, after all this discussion, can Revit be learned independently? Everyone must make their own judgment. Personally, I initially mastered some basic Revit operations through self-study. However, when I encountered complex work challenges, I found myself stuck and eventually decided to enroll in face-to-face courses. Of course, everyone’s situation and goals differ, so take this as a reference.
