What Does a BIM Engineer Do?

What exactly is a BIM engineer? Many would simply say, “Someone who uses BIM software to create models.” While modeling is indeed a fundamental skill, does knowing how to model alone qualify someone as an engineer? Or does proficiency in BIM software automatically make someone a BIM engineer? Here, I would like to share my perspective.

First, let’s consider the professional definition of an engineer. Engineers are individuals who have the ability to operate, design, manage, and evaluate engineering systems. The title “engineer” is typically reserved for those with a professional degree or equivalent work experience in an engineering field. Based on this, a competent engineer not only operates and designs using software but also takes on important management and evaluation responsibilities. Applied to BIM, this means both technical skills and management capabilities are essential to truly be called a BIM engineer.

It’s often said that BIM engineers must be able to operate software. While software proficiency is a necessary baseline, not everyone who knows how to use software qualifies as an engineer. Software operation itself can be divided into three levels: high, intermediate, and low.

Senior level: These professionals are not only highly skilled with software but often have expertise beyond a single program. Completing all stages of a BIM project typically requires multiple tools. A senior BIM engineer usually understands various specialized software, enabling them to communicate effectively and collaborate across disciplines. They also contribute innovative ideas, proactively identify and solve problems, and demonstrate strong professional knowledge and technical skills.

Intermediate level: Generally, these individuals are proficient in one software or their specific area of expertise, with significant experience in their field. They have solid knowledge of their discipline and software skills but may lack cross-disciplinary communication and collaboration abilities.

Entry level: This group typically knows how to operate software only within their own specialty. They primarily create models directly from drawings and follow instructions without independent or innovative thinking. Their understanding of BIM software is limited to modeling, so they are better described as BIM modelers rather than engineers.

From this explanation, you can form your own understanding of what defines a BIM engineer. Furthermore, as projects become more complex and BIM applications deepen, a qualified BIM engineer should also be capable of establishing management systems for BIM implementation. This includes facilitating collaboration between departments and developing BIM standards on construction sites. These management skills are what I believe distinguish a true BIM engineer.
