Heatherwick Studio has unveiled its first public library design, commissioned for the Howard County Library in Maryland, USA. This new building is envisioned as a vibrant community hub, reflecting the evolving and multifaceted role of libraries in urban life. Beyond traditional book lending, the facility will host cultural events, group learning sessions, workshops, and offer spaces for rentals. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024, with an anticipated opening in 2027.

The design draws inspiration from the idea proposed by community planner James Rouse that “the city is a garden that nourishes people.” Heatherwick Studio embraced this concept by creating a structure that serves as a nurturing community center where residents can grow and learn. Situated along the city’s main coastal road, the building boasts panoramic views of Lake Kittamaquendi. Its form gently rises from the lakeside horizon, inviting visitors to explore the building via its lush, sloping green roof.
Designed to support a wide range of educational and cultural programs, the five-story library offers versatile spaces for work, play, and study. Features such as educational kitchens, cafes, and maker labs enrich the community experience, providing venues for gatherings and collaborative activities. Additionally, a spacious open-air theater offers a platform for local organizations to host events like conferences, workshops, and cultural performances.

The outdoor areas complement the building’s educational mission, offering ample space for exploration and learning. The staggered facade and terraced steps, adorned with greenery, encourage visitors to climb and engage with local plant life atop the terraces. This design creates a seamless connection between the library, adjacent public parks, and the lakeshore, reinforcing the library’s role as an essential part of community life.
“Columbia has always taken a socially progressive stance, inspiring innovation in traditional libraries. This project transforms the library from a simple book lending space into a dynamic community center fostering deep learning and social interaction. A walkable, vegetated facade rises from the lakeside, housing an open-air theater for diverse events, play areas, and well-lit rooms for work and study, along with facilities for activities ranging from cooking to IT. This is the community center that every Howard County resident deserves.” — Stuart Wood, Partner and Team Leader at Heatherwick Studio
