Before this project began, few knew that Jiang Jie hailed from Zigong. With the establishment of Jiang Jie’s Hometown, Zigong’s urban identity prominently features this connection. This highlights the profound significance of the project to the city. Jiang Jie, a young martyr, left behind few physical belongings. Instead, she is remembered primarily through her artistic image. Symbols such as red rocks, red plums, and red stars have become deeply intertwined with her legacy, serving as key inspirations and foundational elements for the design.

Project Overview: Centered around the restoration of Jiang Jie’s former residence, this project is located in Jiangjiawan, Dashanpu, Da’an, Zigong. The site is embraced by mountains, ponds, and bamboo groves, offering a serene and elegant environment characteristic of southern Sichuan villages. Covering more than 400 acres, the project includes restoring Jiang Jie’s house, the Red Plum Statue Square, and constructing the Jiang Jie Memorial Hall, which spans 14,000 square meters.

As the former residence area was reorganized, the exhibition content was moved to the new memorial hall to preserve the authenticity of the original home. Initially, some commercial plans conflicted with this goal and were adjusted accordingly. The final decision placed the memorial hall in the low-lying hills directly east of the former residence. This alignment creates a natural axis with the sculptures and the original home, all facing east, embodying the intended symbolic meaning. Jiang Jie’s sculpture, redesigned to look eastward, forms three staggered elevations along this axis, imparting a sense of depth and artistic perspective.

By partially grading a steep slope along Liyi Valley, the memorial hall was gently integrated into the mountain terrain along the axis. The design focuses on minimizing the height of the main buildings to respect the environment, creating a stepped axis that rises layer by layer. This landscape design also facilitates the future shaping of “red rocks” emerging naturally from the ground. The building layout forms a five-point star with a central split that opens a visual corridor along the axis. The inward-facing layout generates a powerful energy focused on the central square, which serves as a gathering space for commemorative events such as memorial services. Varied building volumes—high and low—overlap and merge with the terrain, while pathways on inclined surfaces efficiently direct visitor flow in all directions. This radial organization enhances the building’s control over the entire site.

To convey the power of abstract red rock, the design employs knife-cutting and axe-chopping techniques to shape the forms. Large blocks are cleanly cut into smaller pieces, creating natural cracks that run from the facade to the roof, producing light grooves. Sunlight filtering through these gaps generates rich indoor light and shadow effects, evoking Jiang Jie’s spiritual yearning for light during her time in Zhazidong. The building’s outer skin is occasionally peeled back to create tight spaces such as mountain steps or rooftop access, contrasting with the expansive memorial site along the central axis. This juxtaposition symbolizes the rugged revolutionary journey alongside a hopeful spiritual vision. While the group of buildings lies harmoniously within the landscape, the memorial’s significance is reinforced by its towering structures along the axis. These structures captivate visitors from all angles and are emphasized through material contrasts and sharp, staggered forms that echo Jiang Jie’s resolute character. The memorial notably stands out against the backdrop of the water in front.

The material selection honors the spirit of Red Rock, utilizing GRC high-strength concrete panels known for their strong plasticity as the primary exterior surface. After careful consideration, different textures were crafted on the panels’ surfaces, with axe chiseling used to emphasize texture details. Prefabrication and factory processing shortened on-site installation time, thereby reducing the overall construction timeline.

This integrated approach carefully unites concept, layout, form evolution, and materials to create an architectural complex that fully embodies Jiang Jie’s spirit. Following Jiang Jie’s sacrifice and the project’s completion, numerous groups have spontaneously organized commemorative events here, reflecting the project’s success in fostering a positive and meaningful atmosphere.
