Catharsis is a fractal gallery designed to showcase our boundless dreams. It embodies the spirit of freedom, radical tolerance, and self-expression, welcoming all forms of art and performance. Serving both as an open-air desert theater and a traveling museum for Burning Man visitors worldwide, Catharsis will be reassembled in different cities after the event.

Catharsis is a tangible representation of hyperbolic space. Could it truly be a three-dimensional geometric form that exists only in another reality?
This infinite structure features seven entrances leading to an upper level. As you explore deeper into its interior, increasingly intricate and intimate spaces emerge, forming a dreamlike gallery and performance venue open to all for artistic expression.

Catharsis is constructed from 60 wooden modules connected by metal hinges, developed in collaboration with engineers. Its sevenfold rotational symmetry simplifies manufacturing and assembly. The structure incorporates strip nets and wooden frameworks, creating spaces where visitors can rest and interact both inside and above. Circular benches below also provide parking spots for bicycles.

As a fractal open-air theater, Catharsis offers limitless possibilities for art placement and performance. Its open grid design fosters interaction and serves as a platform for community gifts both inside and beyond the desert.
The construction team is partnering with drone art company Drone Stories to create a digital flame—an artistic display of Catharsis’s fractal geometry in the sky—without using real fire.

Catharsis defies ownership or quantification. Throughout the event, it continuously reinvents itself as visitors inspire one another through shared gifts. The name originates from Greek, meaning the release of sadness through music and art—a form of purifying artistic expression. In psychoanalysis, catharsis transforms the subconscious into conscious awareness, turning dreams into understandable reality. It represents a collective artistic process aimed at emotional release.

Catharsis acts as a gateway to our dreams, resembling a fractal maze where mathematics and nature intersect. Each experience is unique—like a dream within a dream. Visitors may find themselves wandering through one rabbit hole after another, yet still discover their own path. Perhaps dreams are essential to understanding reality.

Currently, Catharsis exists only in the Metaverse virtual world of BRCvr, available as a VR experience across thousands of digital worlds to help navigate the pandemic. It serves as the ‘yin’ to the ‘yang’ temple. Rather than saying architecture has gone virtual, it is more accurate to say that virtual creations have become real.

Visitors experience a profound sense of reality as they explore Catharsis’s digital form. We believe this project must transcend the metaverse by manifesting as a physical structure. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy involves bringing our dreams into conscious awareness, and Catharsis aims to do just that.
Our mission is to build a bridge between Blackstone City and communities without direct access by reassembling Catharsis in other locations.
