Tanatap Crown Garden features a simple yet remarkable double-layered, multi-axis colored concrete structure that appears to float within the garden. It offers exceptional openness and transparency, achieved through its prestressed shell construction. The roof seamlessly extends from the garden floor down to the ground level, incorporating a series of seating areas on top.

Situated in Bekasi’s consistently hot climate, where temperatures hover around 35°C year-round, Tanatap Crown Garden serves as a commercial garden. It is part of the broader Tanatap Commercial Garden series, which showcases how thoughtful design can harness site-specific characteristics to deliver passive, low-energy commercial spaces that thrive and generate profit in tropical environments despite environmental challenges.

The design draws inspiration from the woven texture of tropical tree canopies surrounding the site, creating vibrant contrasts through its use of color. Its open-plan layout encourages natural airflow throughout the entire space. Antonius Richard, lead architect at RAD+ar, explains, “We aimed to seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor living experiences by using low-tech design strategies that extend the garden’s scenery into the interior. The building itself acts as a bold, natural backdrop.”
He continues, “The Crown Garden’s experience is shaped by its playful yet harmonious spatial levels, enhanced by natural light that casts colorful reflections and dynamic shadows. This interplay allows the architecture, unique spaces, and furniture to complement each other beautifully.”

The combination of multi-axis colored concrete and semi-transparent elements across the two-story structure enhances the views of the tropical almond garden. This design creates an elegant space, ideal for gathering, pausing, and relaxation.

RAD+ar has also refined the tropical experience with its innovative interior-exterior concept, integrating a series of “suspended” concrete structures that evoke a changing atmosphere throughout the day. The roof and ceiling elements extend toward the tree canopy, inviting visitors to freely move among the almond tree crowns.
The open layout improves circulation within the space, facilitating interaction between bars, communal tables, and other areas.

This canopy garden embodies Tanatap’s vision of decentralizing sustainable architecture by integrating sustainable business practices. The design fosters a community space that blends galleries with commercial garden settings, particularly in developing regions like Indonesia.
