The Pistohiekka sauna restaurant marks the first phase in revitalizing the once-thriving Pistohiekka resort, which experienced decline starting in the 1980s. This development reintroduces much-needed amenities to the area, featuring a lakeside sauna and restaurant.
Designed by the local architecture firm Studio Puisto, the sauna restaurant is a key part of Pistohiekka’s tourism and wooden architecture development. The project’s concept centers on a strong design aesthetic, with the restaurant and sauna arranged around a three-quarter circle, enclosing a central open outdoor space.

Set on a vacant plot adjacent to the forest, the building’s dark exterior contrasts sharply with its warm, light wooden interior. This design harmonizes with the exquisite natural surroundings of Saimaa Lake.
In sauna restaurants, the lakeside views and outdoor terrace areas are vital. Guests can savor summer sunsets while dining at the high-quality restaurant and unwinding in the sauna.

The defining feature of the Pistohiekka sauna restaurant is its location nestled between a tranquil bay and rocky terrain, offering breathtaking views of the lake. This complex was designed alongside the broader area development, collaborating closely with the client to create a unique concept that highlights the region’s distinct character.
The resort is envisioned as a destination that attracts visitors from afar, emphasizing the integration of architecture with the surrounding landscape. Both buildings embrace the natural scenery, allowing guests to enjoy the beauty of Saimaa Island in any weather, whether sunny or misty.

The curved courtyard of the restaurant offers panoramic views both indoors and outdoors. The sauna room features a distinctive circular roof opening, creating a thematic link between the buildings.
A top-tier professional team ensured a smooth and efficient process from design through construction to final completion. Thanks to the project owner’s commitment and the contractor’s expertise, the initial vision was faithfully and flawlessly realized in the finished result.
