Fahed+Architects, a boutique design firm, created a temporary exhibition hall for Abwab 2017. This installation became one of the highlights of Dubai Design Week, showcasing talented designers from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.
Environmental sustainability is central to Fahed+Architects’ philosophy. That’s why the exhibition hall was constructed entirely from 100% recyclable materials sourced from local waste management company Bee’ah. The hall’s exterior features an interwoven layer of mattress springs, naturally forming an organic shape that appears to float among the surrounding buildings.

The mesh structure, made from springs of varying sizes, enhances the spatial dynamics of the exhibition hall. Natural light creates a distinctive and ephemeral effect, emphasizing the hall’s luxurious ambiance rather than the origin of its materials. Thanks to the springs’ inherent resilience, dappled light filters through, illuminating the exhibits below. This semi-transparent grid allows visitors to view the displays from multiple angles, seamlessly merging art and architecture.

Fahed+Architects demonstrates how materials can be repurposed after their lifecycle, transforming waste into precise architectural structures. This project brings meaningful recycling initiatives to Dubai. The exposed mesh surface reveals the material’s purest form, highlighting its fundamental structure and its connection to the ground and overall form.
