The Dayou Bookstore is situated on the campus of the Communist Party of China Central Committee in Haidian District, Beijing. This project is a renovation and enhancement of the original Dayou Bookstore at the Central Party School, expanding its functions and revitalizing its space.

Originally, the project involved an L-shaped corridor attached to the Dayou Bookstore. Over time, due to aging and lack of maintenance, this corridor became a neglected space used primarily for storage.

The renovation focused on harmonizing the corridor with its surrounding environment, using books as a medium to establish a unified space both inside and outside the building. The library’s pillars, originally constructed from natural grey stone with a distinct rough texture, were preserved to maintain their rustic, local character.

The renovation also preserved the architectural feature known as the Moon Gate. Placed within the straight corridor, the Moon Gate facilitates interaction between visitors and the surrounding scenery, evoking the artistic spirit of traditional Chinese gardens and reimagining the interplay of calligraphy and painting.

A new metal grille has been designed for the corridor’s exterior facade. This grille creates a “virtual” Moon Gate through a dense, orderly pattern, complementing the “real” Moon Gate located on the opposite side of the colonnade.

For the landscape design, existing vegetation on the site was preserved. Looking from the inner courtyard toward the long corridor, the rhythmic Moon Gate and dense bamboo forest create a serene bamboo atmosphere that complements the spirit of the Party School.
