For the past five years, research on the local architecture of Xiaoshi Village has focused on enriching community value by integrating culture and industry. The Longmen Qicun Art Center project presents an opportunity to establish a regional planning and art exhibition hall, bringing more cultural and artistic initiatives into the local community. We believe this building could mark a turning point for Xiaoshi Village, gradually shifting its development from an inward-looking community to one that engages more actively with the outside world.

The project’s planning emphasizes future operational possibilities and stronger connections with community activities, so great care has been taken to ensure spatial flexibility. This building can function both as an exhibition space and accommodate various formats such as research and commercial services.

The site sits at the village entrance, nestled between two mountains and a river. To the north lies the mountain and the village’s main road, while the south borders the river. The terrain slopes gently downward from west to east. On site, a road connects two residential areas and sees frequent pedestrian traffic. Our goal is to preserve this rural community footprint by situating the building in the triangular plot on the left side of the road, aligning with planned land use while maximizing land conservation. This road will remain open for community traffic, encouraging more people to pass through the building, experience it firsthand, and create more opportunities for future engagement.

What defines rural art centers? Unlike enclosed urban exhibition spaces, rural art centers incorporate nature itself as part of the exhibit. Our design aims to bring this countryside exhibition experience authentically into the rural environment.

The building’s center opens into a circular atrium that embraces the surrounding mountains, sky, breeze, rain, and the historical memories of Xiaoshi Village—including the railway bridge ruins. Standing in the atrium, visitors can feel the vitality of nature alongside the village’s rich coal mining history.

The interior features a circular path surrounding the central courtyard, encouraging visitors to continuously walk through the space. This design fosters interaction among people, nature, and exhibits. Transparent glass curtain walls face different directions, blending exhibition content with rural scenery. This alternation creates an immersive indoor experience where visitors remain aware of the surrounding mountains and forests, satisfying their innate connection to nature.
