View templates are essential for creating, editing, or applying standardized settings across views in Revit. They consist of a collection of view properties—including view scale, discipline, detail level, and visibility settings—that are consistent within specific view types. By using view templates, you can ensure uniformity in the appearance and settings of views throughout a project.
To create a view template, you can either copy an existing one and adjust it as needed, generate a template from an existing project view, or create one directly from the “Graphics Display Options” dialog box.

1. Creating a View Template Based on an Existing Template:
Follow these steps:
- Go to the View tab → Graphics panel → open the View Template dropdown and select Manage View Templates.
- In the View Templates dialog box, use the Discipline and View Type filters to narrow down the list of templates. Each view type template contains different view properties, so select the appropriate view type for your new template.
- From the Name list, choose an existing view template to serve as the base for your new template.
- Click Copy.
- In the New View Template dialog box, enter a name for your template and click OK.
- Adjust the template’s attribute values as needed. If the Include option is selected for an attribute, it will be part of the template. Clearing the Include option excludes that attribute, meaning it will not be affected when the template is applied.
- Click OK to save your changes.
2. Creating a View Template from an Existing Project View:
Here’s how:
- In the Project Browser, select the view you want to base the template on.
- Go to the View tab → Graphics panel → View Templates dropdown, and choose Create Template from Current View. Alternatively, right-click on the view and select Create Template from This View.
- In the New View Template dialog box, enter the template name and click OK. The View Template dialog will appear.
- Modify the attribute values as required. Use the Include option to specify which properties to include in the template.
- Click OK to finalize the template.
3. Creating a View Template from the Graphic Display Options Dialog Box:
Follow these steps:
- Click on the Visual Style Graphic Display Options icon located on the View Control Bar. Note that the new template will inherit the view type of the current view.
- In the Graphic Display Options dialog box, adjust the settings as needed.
- Click Save as View Template.
- In the New View Template dialog box, enter a name for your template and click OK. The View Template dialog box will then be displayed.
- Modify the attribute values as desired, selecting which attributes to include via the Include option.
- Click OK to save the template.
