Located at the base of Gyeryongsan Mountain in Daejeon, South Korea, Tairui Cafe sits where mountains meet rivers, near the entrance of an ancient road. This newly constructed building emerges from the village’s texture and extends directly toward the mountain landscape.

At the mountain’s base, two structures face each other across a central courtyard. The walls appear to cascade from the sky, flowing like a valley through the building, blurring the line between walls and ground. This design creates a dynamic structure that gradually integrates with the surrounding forest.

The ‘Wall of Flowing Water’ connects the courtyard with the interior spaces and links indoor and outdoor environments through a grand staircase. Additionally, an upward-raised corner of the backyard ground generates a contrast of static and dynamic spatial feelings. Together, these elements create natural resting and social areas both inside and outside the café, welcoming visitors on their way to the mountains and forest.

The café is primarily constructed with concrete bricks, emphasizing the seamless flow of space. Other facades made of rough, fragmented bricks change continuously with light and shadow throughout the day, defining the boundary of an architecture that feels intentionally ‘boundaryless.’
