Kerikeri enjoys a pleasant climate, and this center is designed to fully embrace the local environment, allowing children to connect closely with nature. The building spans 700 square meters and is organized into four separate volumes, each catering to different age groups. These volumes are united under a soaring roof that provides shade without fully enclosing the spaces.

The expansive roof shelters the four building volumes along with the surrounding outdoor spaces, creating areas that can be used throughout the day. These include outdoor dining spaces and walkways that encircle a small central garden. At the heart of this garden stands an acacia tree, a focal point that encourages children to engage with nature. The design draws inspiration from local bay cultures, and the seamless transition between indoor and outdoor areas sparks children’s curiosity and exploration.

The project’s primary color palette is natural wood tones, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for children. The facade features overlapping aluminum wooden slats, blending harmoniously with the natural surroundings.

Each classroom is fitted with large sliding glass doors that maximize the connection to the outdoors, ensuring ample sunlight and natural ventilation. This design creates an optimal indoor environment for children.

Inside, each classroom is thoughtfully designed by the New Shoots team to offer customized learning environments tailored to the specific needs of various age groups. Custom cabinets and furniture have been carefully integrated to complement the overall architectural style.

The inviting outdoor areas take full advantage of the warm climate on New Zealand’s North Island, providing an ideal setting that supports the ecological development of Tamariki.
