Sforza House is situated along the Pacific coast, nestled within the natural landscape of La Barra de Colotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Designed by Mexican architect Alberto Kalach, the project embodies a philosophy grounded in understanding, respect, and contemplation of Oaxaca’s coastal environment. It is described as being “at the confluence of the Colotepec River Delta and the sea—where the Sabine River, mangroves, chiffon, and oak trees embrace this vibrant building, reconnecting visitors with the essence and beauty of nature.”

A narrow concave ditch runs through a corridor connecting three building volumes, guiding visitors along the “full moon” swimming pool, whose waters resemble turquoise hues. Ten domes face the Pacific Ocean, offering spectacular sunsets bathed in soft red light. These domes rise two to three times the height of the rooms below, facilitating natural air circulation throughout the structure. The Oaxaca coast enjoys a tropical climate with an average annual temperature of 20°C (68°F).

The interior and exterior spaces embrace a cohesive earth-tone palette that evokes the local coastal sand, reflected in the partitions and coatings. The interplay of concrete and wooden beams forms arch units at varying heights, creating diverse atmospheres. Guests can experience unique levels of contemplation through the site’s temperature, sun trajectory, and the immersive audio-visual sensation of the waves.

Each arch features a custom wooden door with small blinds, providing privacy while still allowing views of the surroundings. The design promotes air circulation, maintaining comfortable temperatures across the 11 rooms, which are categorized into beginner, advanced, and top-level accommodations. Fixed furniture elements like sinks and bathtubs evoke a carved, on-site crafted feel—as if the building itself were a piece of natural stone shaped for living.

According to hotel owner and entrepreneur Ezequiel Ayarza Sforza, “the interior environment is enriched with products from local artisanal regions. These include carpets from Teotitlán del Valle, textiles from Oaxaca Valley, hammocks, chairs, and curtains from Yucatán, and palm lamps from Veracruz. These are combined with decorative elements and amenities sourced from the Oaxaca Mountains, crafted by potters, carpenters, farmers, and beekeepers at the Pueblo del Sol studio. This sustainable production project thrives thanks to the support and contribution of the Sforza Hotel.”

This holistic project also prioritizes local cuisine as a vital aspect of its ecological and social responsibility. The culinary philosophy at Sforza Hotel follows a “farm to table” approach, ensuring the freshness of every ingredient. All produce comes from local growers who honor seasonal cycles and harvest sustainably during non-intensive periods.
