Stories like “Gu Ailing winning gold in freestyle skiing,” “Su Yiming’s soaring ‘Yi’,” and “Bing Dwen Dwen’s freedom” captured the hearts of many during the Beijing Winter Olympics. These Olympic moments acted as a warm hearth in the cold winter, uniting people through the passion for sports.
The Beijing Winter Olympic Games drew visitors worldwide, eager to embrace sports and push their physical and mental boundaries. Supported by national policies and inspiring athletes, the demand for healthy sporting activities has grown significantly, setting the stage for rapid development in sports architecture.

Sports and Architecture
“Form follows function” – Lewis Sullivan
Sports architecture has always symbolized the Olympic spirit, with iconic venues like Athens’ National Stadium, Beijing’s Bird’s Nest, and London’s Olympic Stadium leading the way. Today, the Yanqing and Zhangjiakou Sports Centers embody ecological and sustainable design principles alongside functional excellence.

From the snowy north to the rainy Jiangnan region, how will Hangzhou inspire sports architecture? The answer lies in a venue seamlessly integrated with the city, powered by green energy and resource recycling.

The Hangzhou Li Ning Sports Park is situated in the heart of Genbei New City, surrounded by residential communities such as Yuexiu Park 1872 and Jianhua Family Garden. The project covers a planned construction area of 57,647 square meters, with a total built-up area of 68,800 square meters and an estimated investment of approximately 800 million yuan.

#Honoring the past, embracing the future#
– Preservation and Innovation
With a total planned site area of 57,647 square meters, the project maintains ample green park space and outdoor sports fields by limiting building density to just 15%. The challenge was to design a high-standard, modern sports complex combining a cultural center and sports activity center within a building footprint below 9,000 square meters. This goal formed the core design principle of the project.

#Move with the wind#
Running among trees, buildings, and clouds
The design employs large-scale landscaping and an elevated running track, blending nature and architecture to create a sports complex with minimal ground coverage.

#All encompassing#
– Integrating people, sports architecture, and the park environment
The design focuses on creating a multifunctional building that prioritizes sports activities while preserving park usability, ensuring a seamless integration with the surrounding natural environment.

#Adapt to local conditions#
– Simple and efficient energy use
The design responds to building function requirements by incorporating simple, appropriate technologies. It utilizes passive energy strategies suited to Hangzhou’s climate and maximizes renewable energy use.

#Simplifying complexity into simplicity#
– Refining design details
Prioritizing energy storage and recycling, the project carefully selects building materials to avoid high-energy, environmentally harmful, wasteful, or radioactive components.

The architectural design incorporates flexible and adaptable spaces to reduce building mass and conserve construction resources.

#Innovation knows no bounds#
– A celebration of passionate sportsmanship
The successful completion of Phase I of the Hangzhou Li Ning Sports Park project proves that in the core urban economic zones, sports and cities can continuously create inspiring stories. Looking ahead to Phase II, dubbed “Bridge Across the Sky,” we eagerly anticipate new innovative designs that will further enrich Hangzhou’s sports landscape.
