Issue:
When using AutoCAD, the program may consume most of the system’s available memory. This often happens when opening or saving files, or when working with one or multiple open graphics. The problem might be specific to certain files or occur across all files.
As a result, both AutoCAD’s performance and overall system responsiveness may degrade significantly. The program might eventually freeze, requiring you to terminate the acad.exe process via the Windows Task Manager.
Sometimes, after saving once, memory usage spikes excessively, or the RAM consumption increases with each save. This leads to worsening memory shortages, causing graphics to become unresponsive and the program to hang.
Possible Causes:
The issue can stem from several factors, including:
- A large number of annotative objects within the drawing.
- Corruption in the drawing file.
- Conflicts with graphic drivers.
- Missing or outdated AutoCAD updates.
- Damaged user configuration files.
- Pending or missing Windows 10 updates.

Recommended Solutions:
To resolve the memory issue in AutoCAD, try one or more of the following steps:
- In AutoCAD’s command line, type
SAVEFIDELITYand set its value to0. - Install the latest AutoCAD updates.
- Update your graphics card driver to the newest version.
- Ensure DirectX is installed and up to date.
- Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages.
- Reset AutoCAD user settings to default.
- Check for file corruption by saving a new drawing created from a fresh
acad.dwtoracadlt.dwttemplate and compare memory usage with the existing drawing. If memory usage is normal on the new file, the original drawing may require cleaning or repair. - Uninstall antivirus software temporarily to see if it affects performance.
- Install any missing or pending Windows 10 updates.
