The Health Specialty Center at D’Youville College addresses two major challenges in Buffalo, New York’s western community. This area is home to a large immigrant and refugee population, yet it suffers from limited access to essential services, including healthcare. Residents face complex issues like widespread poverty and food insecurity. Additionally, the region is expected to experience a critical shortage of healthcare professionals, exceeding 10,000 by 2024.

The Health Professional Center transforms these challenges into opportunities. It is the first health center in the area to feature innovative learning spaces, workforce training centers, and extensive virtual training resources. The center offers primary healthcare services including rehabilitation medicine, nutrition, nursing, and pharmacy.
Beyond healthcare, the building improves community access to services, provides educational programs aimed at breaking the cycle of chronic diseases, and cultivates a new workforce to meet the high demand for healthcare professionals. It also supports an ecosystem offering living wages for residents within the Buffalo district.

“This center is a world-class facility that represents the future of healthcare and serves as a beacon for providers preparing to deliver high-quality care to those in need, starting here in the Buffalo area,” explained Dr. Lorrie Clemo, Dean of D’Youville College. “It not only enhances the visual landscape of our community but also delivers a profound social impact on our diverse and underserved population.”

To ensure the building offers an educational experience aligned with future career opportunities, our team collaborated closely with D’Youville College and its partner, Catholic Health. Together, we designed the spaces and teaching methods to integrate breakthrough virtual and simulation tools throughout the facility, enhancing student learning and outcomes.
