“Having children is not a disease.” Xiamen Hongai Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital offers specialized professional services in obstetrics, aiming to make childbirth safe and joyful.
The elegant curved architecture features dedicated gardens for obstetrics, gynecology, inpatients, and even sunken gardens within the hospital’s outdoor spaces. Separate entrances and pathways for obstetrics and gynecology ensure smooth flow without interference. The staggered curves of the building incorporate intimate sky gardens on every floor, enriching the internal environment.
The interior design combines a soft and graceful aesthetic with clear, rational circulation and functional zoning. The orthogonal modular layout facilitates easy adaptation and expansion of various medical functions.

Advanced facilities including professional surgical units, ICU, and NICU not only guarantee childbirth safety but also provide comprehensive services throughout the maternity journey—from prenatal care and delivery rooms (including LDR and LDR-P rooms) to postpartum wards, VIP suites, rehabilitation, and parenting support.
The interior exudes warmth and modern style, complemented by a facade mesh that balances lightness and privacy. Vibrant dandelion murals symbolize boundless vitality, while the central lounge bathes in natural sunlight and moonlight, creating an artistic atmosphere that celebrates reproductive health and makes the experience pleasurable.

Efficient Layout
The hospital covers approximately 96,000 square meters with a total height of around 48 meters. It is designed to accommodate 600 beds and features a common podium with two inpatient towers on the north and south sides, forming a wind- and rain-protected integrated complex. Vincent Zhang, chief architect at LEMANRAC Swiss Rui Meng Design, led the project.
The first through fourth floors of the podium serve distinct functions: F1 hosts obstetrics extension services, prenatal education, postpartum rehabilitation, emergency, and neonatal emergency care; F2 includes obstetrics clinics, VIP clinics, delivery rooms, surgical theaters, and NICU; F3 is dedicated to gynecology clinics, surgeries, ICU, and VIP services; F4 houses administrative and logistical support such as the Translational Medicine Ward, Central Laboratory, Pathology, Blood Bank, Library, Information Center, and administrative offices.
Above the podium, the north tower contains six floors of double-occupancy wards, while the south tower offers two floors of VIP inpatient wards. Nearly all standard wards face southeast with pleasant views and benefit from natural light and ventilation.
The basement level functions as a hub for pedestrian and vehicle exchange, as well as logistics and service support.

Optimized Workflow
Emergency cases can be swiftly transferred via dedicated medical staircases directly to the surgical suites, which are adjacent to the ICU on the same floor. The supply center and surgical areas feature dedicated elevators for sterilization and clean transport, enabling rapid transfer of biological samples between surgery and pathology departments.
The underground drug storage and clean goods unloading area connect smoothly to the clean goods ramp. Medications are distributed through an integrated logistics system to outpatient pharmacies, emergency pharmacies, delivery rooms, surgical areas, NICU, ICU, and wards. Similarly, sterilized items are transported efficiently to respective floors and departments.
A dedicated food delivery route leads to the kitchen warehouse unloading zone. The nutrition kitchen uses food carts to supply wards via food elevators, including the ICU and staff cafeteria. Laundry services are managed through a separate system: soiled uniforms are sent to the underground laundry via sewage elevators, and clean uniforms are redistributed to each area through the logistics network.
Waste management is carefully organized, with domestic and medical waste sorted and temporarily stored within each ward before being transported separately via dedicated elevators to underground waste collection areas. Waste is then removed through dedicated ramps to disposal zones, ensuring hygiene and efficiency.

Energy-Efficient Design
The building’s relatively low height enhances usability and reduces energy consumption for both occupants and equipment. The design of the double-layer surgical department allows selective operation of spaces according to demand, further saving energy.
Rooftop gardens with soil cover improve roof insulation, while exterior wall shading reduces heat gain from direct sunlight. Window setbacks provide horizontal shading, and Low-E glass minimizes solar heat entering the interior.
Extensive underground functional spaces optimize land use and leverage the earth’s natural cool temperature to reduce building cooling loads. Outdoor water spray sculptures add vibrancy to the environment and provide natural cooling and heatstroke prevention around the building.

Inviting Environment
The interior palette of light gray, white, and wood tones creates a modern yet warm atmosphere. From restrooms and nurse stations to the central hall, soft curves and arcs repeatedly symbolize the nurturing beauty of life.
The gentle facade, imaginative dandelion murals, and lush sky gardens bring the building closer to a dreamlike state. This is not just a sterile medical facility—it is a place of warm care, engaging spaces, and artistic ambiance designed to make childbirth a happy and beautiful experience.
