The buildings constructed here hold significant value in the development of public facilities, particularly in local cities. They create unique structures that are inseparable from their specific locations. Drawing inspiration from the local culture, history, and geography, we have consistently embraced the concept of delivering architecture that is precisely attuned to its regional context.

About Xingqiao: Xingqiao City in Fukuoka Prefecture is situated roughly 25 kilometers southeast of Kitakyushu City. It serves as the central hub of the Keizhu area, home to around 70,000 residents. Straddling the border between Fukuoka and Oita Prefectures, the city faces the Seto Inland Sea to the east and is bordered by the Chikuzi Mountains to the west. The name “Xingqiao” originates from combining the characters “Xing,” representing the former Xingshi Village, and “Qiao,” representing the old Daqiao Village, following the reconstruction and merger of these regions.
The project site is located on the right bank of the Changxia River, which flows along the boundary between Jiuxing Village and Jiudaqiao Village. While maintaining the historical division between these areas, the site also contributes to the existing urban landscape.

Facing this site stands the former Xingqiao Branch of the old Bank of China, now known as the Xingqiao Red Brick Building. Designed under the guidance of master architect Kingo Chenno, this iconic red brick structure symbolized the region’s administrative and economic strength at the time.

This project carries great significance, combining multiple elements to enhance the lives of local residents and stimulate the revitalization of the city center. Our goal was to expand the library’s appeal and develop it as a comprehensive facility supporting civic activities and early childhood education. Situated on the historic land of Xingqiao, the building embodies qualities such as symbolism, locality, vibrancy, and tranquility, while connecting the old Xingqiao and Daqiao Villages.

We recreated the street scenes of the old Xingshi and Daqiao Villages within the upper and lower levels of the Rubik’s Cube-inspired building. The two independent spaces are connected by the building’s twisted design. Internally, the building’s functions progress in a gradient: the lower levels are dynamic and lively, while the upper levels become increasingly quiet and peaceful.
The lower cube faces the Red Brick Pavilion and serves as a vibrant, welcoming space that honors local history and invites community engagement. The upper cube houses reading areas and desks that overlook the Changxia River and distant mountains, providing a serene environment for relaxation and study.

To achieve the unique twisted form of the building, we invested considerable effort in structural design. The upper cube is constructed with a steel frame, reducing weight and allowing the upper level to cantilever outward. The lower cube utilizes reinforced concrete, balancing structural forces with the steel upper structure. This combination optimizes cost-efficiency and earthquake resistance while preserving the building’s distinctive twisted cube appearance and spatial openness.

From its striking external shape in the city center, the twisting Rubik’s Cube building naturally draws attention. Yet, as visitors move around and view it from different angles, it becomes clear how seamlessly it integrates with the surrounding streetscape.

We envision this Rubik’s Cube-inspired framework enduring through the changing times, becoming a lasting landmark. Simultaneously, we hope this building will represent a fresh chapter in the ongoing history of the local community.
