Situated along Jinsha Lake in Jinwan, Zhuhai, 10 Design—an international architectural firm within the Egis Group—warmly invites visitors to explore the newly opened Huafa Shangdu Shopping Center, designed and constructed by Egis Group. Covering approximately 117,000 square meters, Jinwan Huafa Shangdu marks the second completed project by 10 Design in the Huafa Jinwan Aviation New City, following the Jinwan Industrial Service Center, with the Jinwan International Business Center soon to be completed.

The project is led by design partners Ted Givens and Scott Findley, alongside project partner Miriam Auyeung, Chief Operating Officer. The commercial concept integrates traditional courtyard-style landscaping with ultra-modern spatial designs. The layout carefully weaves together the shopping center, commercial street, lakeside retail spaces, and a series of outdoor areas with lake views, forming a cohesive whole. The shopping center and commercial street are seamlessly connected via a glass canopy system, creating a continuous, sheltered walkway that offers protection from the wind.
For the exterior, the design draws inspiration from traditional brick and stone stacking forms, combined with a rhombohedral shape influenced by a four-dimensional hypercube, instilling energy and dynamism into the façade. A palette of deep, dark gradient panels is enhanced with perforated metal plates and night lighting effects, further breaking down the building’s mass and adding visual interest.

Design partner Ted Givens commented:
“Our design for the Jinwan Shangdu Shopping Center reimagines the conventional mall experience, transforming it into an outdoor commercial destination closely connected to nature. This creates a new standard for commercial spaces and offers a fresh shopping experience for the Jinwan area in Zhuhai.”

Contrasting with the open, pedestrian-friendly lakeside facade, the urban street-facing side presents a more secluded impression. Except for two main entrances and select glass panels offering dramatic interior views, the street-facing walls are solid, effectively mitigating urban noise. Towards the lake and lakeside park, transparent glass facades, combined with stepped building volumes and green terraces, blur the distinction between commercial space and natural landscape.

The circulation design invites visitors to leisurely stroll as if through a garden. From the entrance, visitors are guided through the mall atrium and commercial street, extending outward towards garden and lakeside areas via a network of interwoven pathways and spaces. The thoughtfully designed commercial landscape features courtyard fountains, varied lakeside activity zones, pop-up shops, and exhibition stages, encouraging visitors to linger and explore.

Project partner Miriam Auyeung (Chief Operating Officer) shared:
“Through exploring the concept of ‘ultra modernity,’ the design of Jinwan Shopping Center fully embraces Zhuhai’s urban character, celebrating its natural landscapes and outdoor lifestyle. This new shopping destination will undoubtedly become a welcoming and iconic public landmark for the city.”
