The China Pavilion is situated to the east of the China Italy Cultural Exchange Center. Visitors can reach it by walking through a cultural corridor lined with bamboo forests from the China Italy Pavilion. This museum features multifunctional halls, conference rooms, restaurants, qin pavilions, and tea rooms, all infused with Eastern charm.

During the initial design phase, the architect aimed to bridge the cultural differences between China and the West. The overall site layout is inspired by the “Ruyi,” a traditional Chinese gift symbolizing friendship and prosperity between nations. The East and West pavilions are linked by a cultural corridor, surrounded by ponds and bamboo forests.

The China Pavilion and the China Italy Pavilion correspond to the spatial prototype of the Italian Square, reflecting the Eastern philosophy of harmony between heaven and humanity through scenery, form, meaning, and emotion.

Site and Scene: The original site is a bamboo forest with a pond to the west. The design focused on preserving the bamboo forest and integrating the buildings seamlessly within it.

The pavilion’s functions are dispersed throughout the bamboo forest, with courtyard walls defining inner and outer spaces. Three courtyards intersperse the interior, offering mutual views of the indoor spaces, courtyards, and bamboo groves.

Modern Chinese landscape gardens adorn the courtyards, creating a unique interior ambiance. Descending the stairs into the bamboo, visitors can catch glimpses of the hidden qin room, where the sounds of the qin mix softly with the rustling bamboo leaves and the play of light and shadow.

Extending beyond the bamboo forest, the tea room floats above the pond, bathed in sunlight. Looking westward, the Zhongyi Pavilion reflects gently on the lotus pond’s surface.

Architectural Form: The pavilion employs a traditional wooden framework reimagined for modern times, incorporating circular geometric elements.

Cross-shaped arch columns extend continuously from the interior to the exterior, while transparent glass curtain walls dissolve the boundary between indoors and outdoors, inviting natural scenery inside.

An outdoor circular hollow corridor offers a dynamic yet serene play of light and shadow. The courtyard wall extends from the cultural corridor, weaving through the bamboo forest and connecting the buildings, evoking the fluidity and freedom of Chinese calligraphy.

The courtyard windows resemble water droplets, symbolizing nature’s presence.

Concept and Meaning: The China Pavilion is composed of houses, courtyards, corridors, and scenery, designed to blend harmoniously with nature and evoke a sense of retreat.

The element of “scenery” is integral to the architecture—originating from, growing with, blending into, and ultimately becoming part of the natural environment.

This embodies Eastern wisdom, emphasizing harmony with nature and the unity between heaven and humanity.

Emotional Experience: The China Pavilion integrates natural elements such as light, wind, sound, and scent into its spaces with deep respect for nature.

This design fosters emotional memories rich with Eastern charm and stands as a remarkable symbol of cultural exchange between China and Italy.
