Modern Group’s Senior Foreign Trade Mall No.1 has recently opened in Chashan New Town, Namyangju City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. This is the country’s first gallery-style foreign trade mall, enhanced with artistic touches such as art galleries and parks. Its English name, “SPACE1,” is an acronym representing “shopping, entertainment, art, culture, and experience,” with the number 1 symbolizing its unique identity. The overall design concept envisions SPACE1 as a vacation destination for everyone, offering a relaxing retreat for the public during holidays.

The design centers around a striking cubic structure that seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor spaces, creating dynamic visual experiences throughout. Each zone embodies the concept of “paired cities,” forming a three-dimensional façade that enhances spatial interest. By blending brand boundaries, the layout allows smooth transitions between shopping and relaxation areas, offering visitors a diverse and engaging journey.

The first floor features flooring materials inspired by outdoor textures, creating a seamless transition between the garden and indoor shops. Outdoor shading elements combined with cubic forms shape an impressive ceiling. This level hosts a variety of dining and lifestyle brands, including restaurants, bakeries, and cafes, delivering a bright and inviting atmosphere. Notably, the H restaurant at the front offers an open kitchen where guests can observe the cooking process. The “courtyard garden” concept is realized through a greenhouse with painted glass ceilings and central plants, giving visitors the feel of dining outdoors.

The second-floor rest area incorporates open voids that provide visitors with a vertical sense of spaciousness and openness, allowing them to grasp the full scale of the building. Upon entering, guests pass by a stylish accessory store that complements the overall design. This area reflects the “chord variation” concept, combining rich design elements through diverse textures such as fiberglass, acrylic, metal, sliced veneer, concrete, brick, and tile. Each material is carefully selected to match different product lines and themes.

On the fourth floor, the ceiling lighting draws inspiration from the building’s intricate grid form, creating a striking appearance visible from the exterior. Inside, the space emphasizes vastness and texture, achieved through the use of raw, natural materials. As time and nature bring daily changes, the building maintains a unique, warm atmosphere that fosters a connection with the environment. This calming environment aims to become a foundation for visitors’ everyday lives.
