Introduction
Urban renewal has led to a population boom, creating a shortage of educational facilities and increasing the urban burden in high-density neighborhoods. In this context, the challenge for the Chengdu Longquan Tianli Primary School and Kindergarten project was to design a new school in the city center that breaks away from traditional spatial layouts. The goal was to create shared spaces that integrate with the community, turning the school into a landmark within this densely populated area. This aligns with Jian Zhi Design’s (formerly Tianli Design Institute) philosophy: “space is the best, time is the most beautiful.”

The Longquan Tianli Primary School is situated in Damian Town, Longquanyi District, a key area in Chengdu’s “Dongjin” region, about 16 kilometers from Tianfu Square in the city center. The entire project covers a planned land area of 31,770 square meters (approximately 47.65 acres). It is surrounded by well-established communities with high occupancy, yet there are limited supporting kindergartens and primary schools in the area, making the educational resources relatively mature but insufficient.

A Super Learning Environment
The campus buildings are arranged in a linear layout resembling a “dragon,” seamlessly connecting teaching spaces, shared areas, and rooftop gardens. This innovative design breaks away from the traditional “box group” school layout by integrating indoor and outdoor elements, creating a ‘super learning environment.’ A 200-meter standard sports field is strategically placed between the kindergarten and primary school sections, designed for shared use and easy division to accommodate different age groups.
Instead of conventional solid walls, the school’s exterior features transparent glass, enhancing campus vitality and creating an inviting architectural presence for the surrounding community. To address the issue of parental pick-up and drop-off congestion outside the school, a covered car corridor is provided in the setback area, allowing parents who drive to conveniently stop and leave without blocking traffic.

A Spatial Elementary School Featuring Halls, Competition Venues, and a Blend of Technology and Art
The circular hall is a distinctive element of Longquan Tianli Primary School—transparent and dignified. Adjacent to the hall is a runway, repurposed from a fire escape, providing direct access to the 200-meter standard sports field. The hall connects seamlessly with the sports teaching building and the technology and art teaching building.
The classroom units are oriented north-south to maximize natural sunlight. Built in harmony with the terrain, the buildings feature elevated floors that enhance ventilation and provide expansive community views.

Dynamic and Sports-Oriented Kindergarten
Besides sharing the 200-meter standard sports field with the primary school, the Longquan Tianli Kindergarten features indoor craft classrooms and outdoor nature classrooms designed to immerse children in the natural environment.
