In the fast-moving urban environment, people yearn for a sanctuary where they can slow down and savor life, easing their restless spirits. Hua Chu serves as a multifunctional space blending a flower shop with dining, aiming to offer a hidden paradise amidst the city’s hustle and bustle.

The designer draws inspiration from architecture and objects, believing that space is defined by both material and form. Objects serve either functional purposes or act as dynamic carriers within the environment. By exploring the relationship between objects and materials, the space achieves a visual rhythm that can soften boundaries or add intrigue. This symbiotic relationship enhances the value of both space and objects.

The design journey is deeply rooted in the natural form and beauty of flowers. By deconstructing floral shapes, the concept of “flower form” becomes the guiding inspiration throughout the space. From exterior to interior, the design highlights that flowers represent beauty while the kitchen embodies love—the origin of all beauty. Each bloom within the flower kitchen reflects a fresh feeling and learning experience.

The elegant Magnolia, Shanghai’s city flower, was chosen as the floral motif for the staircase area. Like a life-giving bloom thriving in sunlight, its petals warmly envelop visitors, radiating with beauty and grace.

The distinctive alienated structural form connects people and space through petal-inspired shapes, reflected in the exterior facade’s design. This floral motif is magnified and incorporated into plaster sculptures, skillfully guiding the flow of guests and objects deeper into the space. The result is a romantic ambiance where visitors experience the delight of natural light and shadow playing across the architecture.

The space features a gray-white cement palette that highlights the floral beauty, while curled shapes fluidly connect various areas. The material language is intentionally simple, uniting both exterior and interior expressions into a coherent architectural narrative.

Rather than confining the design to a specific style, the team focuses on crafting an atmosphere through the thoughtful combination of materials, space, and light. Architectural simplicity, structural clarity, and material purity serve as the new aesthetic language for this space.

“The city moves slowly because of life, yet fast because of dreams. Amidst this balance of speed and calm, the flower kitchen aims to be the city’s living room — a place for everyone to pause. Over time, it has evolved from a restaurant into a lifestyle, blossoming quietly like a flower nurtured by time. Our hope is to collaborate with designers to celebrate ‘her’ and create golden moments throughout the year.” – Karen, founder of Flower Kitchen
