About Ji · Architectural Firm
TAO, founded by architect Hua Li in Beijing in 2009, stands as one of China’s most dynamic architectural design teams today. TAO views architecture not just as a formal structure but as a living organism deeply connected with its environment.
Most of TAO’s projects are situated in locations rich with natural beauty and cultural history. Their design philosophy focuses on deeply exploring the significance of each site, leveraging local conditions to create architecture and landscapes that are firmly rooted in regional culture and environment. Key themes in their work include the spirit of place, climate responsiveness, sustainable use of local resources, and customized materials and construction techniques.
TAO’s projects have attracted attention from prominent domestic and international media and have been showcased multiple times at prestigious architecture exhibitions such as the 2018 Venice International Architecture Biennale, the 2016 Berlin Aedes Revival Civil Engineering Exhibition, the 2015 New York Contemporary Chinese Architecture Exhibition, the 2014 Venice Biennale ADAPTATION Chinese Architecture Exhibition, and the 2013 Vienna Contemporary East Asian Architecture and Space Practice Exhibition.

TAO’s works have been featured in academic journals both in China and internationally, often appearing on their covers.
Hua Li, the founder and chief architect of TAO, was born in 1972 and earned his Master’s degree in Architecture from both Tsinghua University and Yale University School of Architecture. After practicing in New York, he established TAO in Beijing in 2009.
TAO’s portfolio is diverse, spanning various scales, types, and locations. Notable projects include the Yunnan Gaoligong Handmade Paper Museum, Sichuan Xiaoquan Ethnic Primary School, Mount Wuyi Bamboo Raft Farm, Forest Architecture, Sifang Academy, Dessert Shop, Lens Space, Xinzhai Coffee Manor, Haikou Huandao Experimental School, Xianfeng Xiadi Waterfield Bookstore, the Songshan Lake Science and Technology Exchange Platform Project (winner of an international competition), and the Shenzhen Mangrove Museum (winning bid).
TAO has received numerous accolades, including the 2012 Global Design Pioneer and Best Public Building Award by Architectural Record Magazine, the Young Architect Award by the China Architecture Media Award, the Asia Construction Association Award, nominations for the 2013 Aga Khan International Architecture Award, and the 2016 and 2018 BSI Swiss Architecture Awards, as well as the WA Architecture Award. Hua Li has been invited to speak at international architectural conferences and universities worldwide, and currently serves as a visiting professor at Tsinghua University.
