The Zhongtong Cultural Station is situated in Xiao’ao Village, Tengqiao Town, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province. As the name implies, Xiao’ao Village lies in a small valley surrounded by mountains and water. Winding paths lead to secluded spots and flowing mountain springs, making it an ideal place for living, traveling, and leisurely enjoyment. Visitors can sit and listen to the mountain breeze or appreciate the flowers blooming in the courtyard.
Walking along the hiking trail, the village reveals lush greenery and the soothing sound of spring water. The scenery is not only beautiful but also retains its primitive charm; the original mountain dwellings remain intact, preserving the village’s authentic character.

The village terrain slopes from high in the south to low in the north, with structures predominantly made of stone walls and wooden bungalows. Green tiled stone walls, winding alleys, and natural mountain and river scenery invite leisurely strolls.
Xiao’ao also boasts natural and pastoral attractions such as the Yunshui Valley Scenic Area, a kiwi fruit base, and an edible mushroom base. The Yunshui Valley Scenic Area is located at the end of Xiao’ao Village, upstream of the Xiao’ao Creek Canyon. It features green mountains, clear waters, unique rock formations, deep pools, high waterfalls, and numerous caves. The legend of immortals residing in Xianren Cave has been passed down for centuries.

Inspired by the concept of “Tengqiao Ancient Furniture Culture” and the unique natural and cultural landscape, the project uses metal mesh bridge frames to create a flexible, mobile space. The cultural relay station actively engages with its environment, enhancing public space experiences and serving as a vital community hub connecting local villagers and visitors alike.

The main structure of the cultural station occupies an unused courtyard beside the village street. It includes several scattered side houses of various sizes, a reservoir, and two farmland plots with a height difference of 1.8 meters.

The architectural design preserves the structure and spatial arrangement of existing houses and courtyards, restoring deteriorated areas to a healthy state. This approach fosters a harmonious relationship between old and new elements.

Elements that carry time and memory—such as stone walls, tiled roofs, and old roof trusses—dominate the space. Combined with the functional regeneration for public use, they create a contemporary rural aesthetic that continues the cultural legacy.
