The Westin Hotel, nestled at the base of the mountain in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, has a rich history spanning 130 years. This elegant hotel holds a distinguished place in the area. During the extensive restoration and seismic upgrades, special care was taken to preserve the charm and character of its standalone chapel.

This two-year renovation project made full use of the existing structure. A wooden grid ceiling was added above, paired with indirect lighting to simulate sunlight filtering through tree branches. The redesigned windows further connected the chapel’s interior with the surrounding forest, enhancing the natural ambiance.

The wooden blinds lining the walls create depth and rhythm, extending upward to meet the grid ceiling. This design enhances the overall spatial experience while maintaining the high-quality, serene atmosphere appropriate for a small chapel.

To honor the surrounding natural beauty, rocks and wood form the centerpiece of this sacred space, reflecting traditional Japanese aesthetics.
