Founded by Lu Jie in 2002, Long March Space is located in Beijing’s 798 Art District and spans approximately 2,500 square meters. This gallery integrates exhibition, marketing, art planning, consulting, collection, and publishing services, establishing itself as a leader in the Chinese gallery industry for over a decade. Its prominence is built on a rich history, large scale, professional standards, strong academic positioning, and commercial strength.
As cultural consumption continues to grow, galleries like Long March Space are expanding and diversifying their offerings. Comprehensive upgrades to the visitor experience have become essential. Following a successful collaboration in 2016, StudioHVN Rhode Island Architectural Design Consulting led the first phase of a transformative renovation of Long March Space. In 2019, StudioHVN was invited to continue designing and overseeing the second phase, a 1,500 square meter upgrade project.

The second phase of renovation builds upon the design language established in 2016. It honors the historic architecture while creating a fresh exhibition experience. The original, simple spatial layout has been transformed to include a variety of environments—open, private, courtyard, and museum-style spaces—allowing for versatile display settings within a limited footprint. This design simulates different contexts for exhibiting artworks, enhancing the visitor experience.

The HVN design team’s approach aligns with Long March’s overall business model as a commercial art institution. It accommodates a range of activities including sales, exhibitions, and events, while providing visitors with a continuous and diverse flow through the space.
