The architecture resembles a landscape painting, featuring continuous eaves that allow the elderly to enjoy the southern mountains and waters from beneath the shelter. In this way, the building itself becomes an integral part of the surrounding landscape.

Guangxi is among the first provinces in China to enter an aging society. By the end of 2018, over 7.3 million residents aged 60 and above accounted for 14% of the province’s permanent population. Taikang Home · Guiyuan Elderly Care Community, the 13th project in Taikang Home’s national network, aims to become Guangxi’s premier elderly care institution, offering comprehensive solutions that integrate medical care, support services, and cultural activities tailored for an aging population.
Located in eastern Nanning, Guangxi, the community borders a large natural park to the north and stretches into the project’s northeast corner. A river flows in front of the site, connecting visually with the ecological park in the distance, creating a picturesque natural setting. The terrain features a complex natural elevation change with a maximum height difference of 29 meters, lending the site a raw and wild character.

Designed by a team led by Zhang Hua and He Wei, the Taikang Home · Guiyuan Elderly Vitality Center sits at the heart of the community, harmoniously integrated with the natural landscape and original terrain. The design reflects Guangxi’s natural scenery and local cultural atmosphere through modern architectural techniques. The curved roof mirrors the allure of Guangxi’s karst landscapes, while a long corridor offers views of lakes and mountains, unfolding like a slowly evolving landscape painting.

The Vitality Center encompasses six key functional areas: a senior university, library, fitness center, multifunctional hall, cultural and entertainment center, and food center. The above-ground building area spans 9,178.19 square meters, serving as a communal hub for the entire community.
These functions, along with an adjacent super experience hall for community exhibits and sales, are arranged linearly around the park and connected by a public corridor forming a semi-enclosed park space. This corridor also links the whole community, acting as a sheltered walkway that protects the elderly from wind and rain during activities and transit. The thoughtful circulation enhances convenience and accessibility for residents.
Surrounded by expansive natural landscapes, local flowers and trees are planted in staggered arrangements, creating seasonal changes in scenery. Residents can stroll leisurely along the corridor to connect with nature or enjoy the mountains and rain sheltered under the eaves.

△ Scheme Generation
The roof features a single-layer grid structure forming a continuous curved surface. This design not only fulfills roofing requirements but also reduces structural thickness, increasing the building’s interior ceiling height. A flat locking system secures the roof, which is clad in modern titanium zinc panels known for their high ductility.
Additionally, zinc is a recyclable material that lowers energy consumption during manufacturing. The overlapping rectangular roof panels pay homage to the traditional local roof tile arrangement, blending heritage with modern technology.

Today, the ideals of urban living emphasize a harmonious relationship between humanity and nature. At Nanning’s Taikang Home · Guiyuan Vitality Center, designers have explored this integration, creating a sensory experience that combines architecture, natural environment, and humanistic emotion.
The community includes residential areas, a medical service building, and the vitality center. Developed jointly by SUNLAY Sanlei and Sanlei Fangjian Studio, construction began in February 2020 with completion and operation expected in 2022.
