Hidden deep within the alleyways of downtown Shanghai, Whisper Bar offers a unique venue that seamlessly blends sculptural design with multifunctional spaces for bar, coffee, tasting, and events. In this project, Digittects played a dual role—not only as the designer but also as one of the bar’s shareholders. This expanded involvement enabled a closer integration of design and business strategy from the outset, allowing for a more precise execution of design details within a limited budget.

The space is organized into two distinct zones: the ground floor and the basement. The lively bar on the ground level exudes a youthful and artistic vibe, while the underground private club offers a more intimate and serious atmosphere. These two floors are connected by a mysterious hidden door that leads to a dark, ceremonial staircase, setting the tone for a sensory and emotional journey.

Drawing inspiration from Dadaism, the organic yet restrained growth of the original structure introduces an element of absurdity, evoking a sense that it ‘does not entirely belong’ to this space. Its abrupt forms amplify the dramatic ambiance and cultivate a distinctive drinking experience. The geometric enclosure, combined with a semi-transparent metal curtain, creates a private and comfortable setting for seated guests.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by an infinite mirror wine cabinet and foyer. Hanging wine bottles combined with vibrant lighting produce a mesmerizing, repetitive visual effect. The glass in the wine cabinet has been specially treated to enhance the entrance experience while minimizing light interference with the seating areas. Additionally, lighting at the bar’s base illuminates transparent acrylic tubes from above, reinforcing a relaxed and inviting atmosphere through consistent color coordination.

Descending underground, guests first enter the waiting area, which serves as a hub connecting two private rooms, a restroom, and a storage space. This core area features a movable wine cabinet and a round table, ideal for wine selection and tasting. Mirrored walls envelop the entire space, adding depth and complexity while offering an intimate environment for private conversations.

Entrance to the basement private room
The large private room is divided into three sections by red velvet curtains, which can be opened or closed to adapt the space as needed, enhancing flexibility. The walls retain their original texture following demolition, giving the basement a raw, unfinished character. A one-meter-high brown-red leather wainscoting adds softness both visually and to the touch. Decorative colored glass and sculptural textures heighten the sense of ceremony, creating a mysterious and prestigious atmosphere for guests.
