BIM Q&A | How Can Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Be Integrated with BIM?
Drones primarily function as aerial vehicles, serving as efficient tools for capturing real-world data. However, before the widespread adoption of drones—or in indoor environments where drones cannot operate—BIM can be combined with real-world modeling through handheld or vehicle-mounted “ground” scanning devices. A crucial element in this integration is the use of point clouds.
A point cloud consists of a collection of vectors within a three-dimensional coordinate system, typically represented by (X, Y, Z) coordinates. Beyond spatial positioning, each point in the cloud can also contain additional data such as RGB color values, grayscale intensity, depth information, and segmentation results.
