BIM Q&A | Standards for Creating BIM Families
The BIM family, also known as the building family, plays a vital role in the development of building information models both today and in the future.
BIM models consist of various families, which are categorized into regular component families and specific component families. Within a project model, standard building families can be customized by adjusting existing parameters to ensure uniqueness and suitability for the project.
However, some projects require components that cannot be created using regular families. In such cases, specific families are needed. If a specific family exists within the family library, it can be directly accessed and controlled through parameters to fulfill the project’s requirements.
That said, the family library is not all-encompassing. Sometimes, the families needed for a project are not available within the library. When this happens, it becomes necessary to create a custom family tailored to the project’s specific needs.
