BIM Q&A: Navigating Advanced BIM – Is an Exam Required?

BIM Q&A | How to Approach Advanced BIM: Is an Exam Necessary?

1. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security offers the National BIM Skill Level Examination (Level 1), which is divided into three tiers:

  • Level 1: BIM Modeling Engineer;
  • Level 2: Senior BIM Modeler, with specializations in architecture, structure, and equipment design;
  • Level 3: BIM Design Application Modeler, with majors including architectural design, structural design, equipment design, and construction and engineering cost management. This level emphasizes specialized model analysis based on each major.

The exam is jointly administered by the Education and Training Center of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Chinese Society of Graphic Arts. Successful candidates receive a certificate issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, including two certificate samples per student. Exams are held twice annually, usually in June and December.

2. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology offers the National BIM Professional and Technical Talent Skills Examination, which covers three main areas:

  • BIM Modeling Technology;
  • BIM Project Management;
  • BIM Strategic Planning.

The BIM Modeling Technology exam, organized by the Ministry, includes three subjects: “Introduction to BIM Technology,” “BIM Modeling Application Technology,” and “BIM Design and Construction Comprehensive Skills and Practice.” Candidates who pass receive a Professional Skills Certificate issued by the Vocational Skills Appraisal and Guidance Center for the Electronic Communication Industry under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This certificate can be verified through the Ministry’s Education and Examination Center. Exams are conducted twice a year, typically in mid to late June and December.

3. The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development administers the National BIM Application Skills Examination (Level 1), which consists of three levels:

  • Level 1: BIM Modeler;
  • Level 2: Professional BIM Application Engineer, specializing in architectural design, structural engineering, equipment engineering, and engineering management (civil/installation);
  • Level 3: Comprehensive BIM Application Specialist. This level requires modeling skills that integrate multiple disciplines, implement BIM processes, develop BIM standards, and facilitate multi-party collaboration, with a focus on BIM’s management applications.

The exam is organized by the China Construction Education Association. Upon passing, candidates receive a qualification certificate for BIM application professional skills training and examination in housing and urban-rural construction. The National BIM Application Skills Examination occurs twice a year during the second and fourth quarters, with dates arranged by the Construction Education Association.
