BIM Q&A | What Book Should I Buy to Learn Revit Parameter Families?
The Family Categories and Parameters tool lets you assign predefined category properties to the component you are creating. This tool is only available within the Family Editor.
Family parameters define various behaviors or identification data within a family. Different categories have unique family parameters, depending on how Revit uses the components. Common family parameters that influence family behavior include:
-
Always Vertical: When selected, the family remains vertical at 90 degrees, even if placed on a sloped surface, such as a floor.
-
Based on Work Plane: This option makes the family align with the active work plane. It allows any unowned family to become a work plane-based family.
-
Sharing: Applicable only when a family is nested inside another and loaded into a project. Shared nested families can be independently selected, tagged, and scheduled apart from their host family. If not shared, the host and nested families are treated as a single unit.
-
Identification Data: Includes parameters like OmniClass number and OmniClass title, both based on OmniClass Table 23 product classification.
To specify family parameters, follow these steps:
-
In the Family Editor, go to the Create tab (or Modify tab) and open the Properties panel. Click on Family Categories and Parameters.
-
Choose the family category from the dialog box to import its properties into your current family.
-
Set the desired family parameters. Keep in mind that available options depend on the selected family category.
-
Click OK to apply the changes.
