BIM Q&A | Basic Knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit: How to Quickly Get Started with ArchiCAD
I have been using AutoCAD and Revit at school, and both run very smoothly for me. However, my new studio exclusively uses ArchiCAD, which I have never worked with before. I’m completely unsure how to get started. Any advice would be appreciated.
PS: I haven’t watched any online tutorials yet. I just downloaded ArchiCAD and opened it once. Although its interface looks somewhat similar to Revit, it feels quite different from the other two programs.
ArchiCAD is especially well-suited for architects. The latest version, ArchiCAD 19, significantly improves its backend capabilities. Both ArchiCAD and Revit are BIM software with many similarities. ArchiCAD relies more on built-in, intensive objects, while Revit depends heavily on families.
The objects included in ArchiCAD typically meet most architectural needs, making it more straightforward, whereas Revit can feel more complex. Although ArchiCAD supports customizable GDL objects, creating them requires more advanced skills.
Using ArchiCAD is quite similar to Revit in terms of workflow: you customize object parameters, work on a 2D layout, and then switch to a 3D view. This process results in a detailed and refined building model.
