BIM Q&A | What Does “Maximum Slope Length” Mean in Revit?


The total height of a staircase is the sum of the heights of each individual stair level. By knowing the height of each stair level and the total number of steps, you can calculate the overall height of the staircase.

Additionally, if you know the angle between the staircase and the ground, you can use trigonometric functions to determine various dimensions. Alternatively, if you have the width of each stair level, you can find the total width by multiplying by the number of steps. Using the Pythagorean theorem, the staircase length can be calculated with the formula: C = √(A² + B²).

There are two common methods to calculate the slope length:

  1. Measure the horizontal projection length of the slope and the vertical height. Then, apply the Pythagorean theorem to find the slope length, which represents the length of the staircase.
  2. Measure the horizontal projection length of the slope and the angle between the staircase and the ground. Use the cosine trigonometric function to calculate the slope length.
