BIM Q&A | How to Import Plant3D into Revit
1: In 3ds Max, first group all objects that share the same material. Hide any parts that are not part of this group, then export the visible elements in DWG format.
2: In Revit, create a new family file. Import the DWG file exported from 3ds Max into this family, making sure to align it from origin to origin—this step is crucial. Next, select the imported geometry and assign the corresponding material within the family editor.
3: Repeat this process for each group of materials in the 3ds Max model. Once all materials are processed, combine them to create a comprehensive family file, which you can then load into your Revit project.
Note: Within the family editor, you can only select imported symbols but cannot assign materials directly. So how do you manage material assignments?
Solution: In 3ds Max, group objects by material, hide all other materials, and export each group separately as a DWG file. Then, import each DWG into Revit families and assign materials accordingly. Repeat this approach for all material groups to maintain correct material assignments.
