BIM Q&A | Why Does a Revit Model Need to Be Upgraded Every Time?
Revit has introduced a new electromechanical prototype. Each time you open the model, it requires upgrading before use. Is there a way to use it directly? Thank you all for your responses.
When you open a model created in an earlier version of Revit, it often needs to be upgraded to the current version.
In the Revit “Open” dialog box, you can check the last saved version of the file.
Important: Models created or upgraded in a newer version of Revit are not backward compatible. Once saved after upgrading, they cannot be opened in earlier software versions.
The file upgrade may include the following types of content:
-
Model files (.RVT)
-
Family files (.RFA)
-
Template files (.RTE)
Opening the Model in Revit
Launch Revit and open the model or family that requires upgrading. The upgrade process will start automatically. You’ll see messages indicating the model’s current version and the version it will be upgraded to. Depending on the model’s size, this process may take some time.
Once the upgrade completes, save the model to avoid repeating the upgrade next time. This will also speed up future openings.
Tip: If you accidentally upgrade and save the file, you can restore the model from the most recent backup. Open the latest backup file with the appropriate Revit version indicated in the message. While some recent changes might be lost, the majority of the project will be preserved.
If you prefer not to upgrade the model to the current software version, click Cancel Upgrade.
If you choose Cancel Upgrade:
-
The model will not be upgraded and cannot be opened in the current software version.
-
If you cancel upgrading a loaded family, it will not be upgraded or loaded into the project.
-
To open the model without upgrading, launch the matching Revit version shown in the message, then locate and open the model.
Opening the Model by Double-Clicking
You can open Revit and the model simultaneously by browsing your file system and double-clicking the model file. By default, this will launch the most recently installed version of the software.
If the model was created in an earlier version, it will prompt for an upgrade.
When this happens, a dialog box will appear with options:
-
Upgrade Model: The model will be upgraded to the latest installed version and then opened. Remember to save the upgraded model to avoid repeating the process. After saving, the model will no longer be compatible with earlier versions.
-
Cancel Upgrade: The model will not be upgraded or opened, and the latest software version will not launch. To open the model without upgrading, start the correct Revit version indicated in the message, then open the model from there.
