BIM Q&A | Where to Find Worksets in Revit 2020
First, let’s clarify what a workset is. Simply put, a workset in Revit functions similarly to layers in CAD. However, it goes beyond just organizing elements visually. Because BIM supports collaborative workflows, worksets help distinguish different users’ work and play a crucial role in isolating and managing elements during model assembly.
In Revit 2020, the worksets panel is located at the bottom center of the interface, near the lowest middle section of the screen.
To access the worksets, click the Worksets button, which opens the corresponding dialog box. From there, click OK to proceed.
Within this dialog, you can view the current worksets. You also have the ability to create new worksets, delete existing ones, or modify their properties—giving you full control over how your project is organized.
So, what is the practical purpose of worksets? For example, aside from their key role in collaboration, worksets allow you to manage visibility easily. Imagine you want to isolate all columns in your model. By assigning beams, slabs, and columns to separate worksets early on, you can simply hide the worksets for beams and slabs, leaving only the columns visible. This makes viewing specific components much more efficient compared to other methods, as illustrated below.
How do you assign elements to different worksets? When creating components, set the desired workset as the current active workset. Alternatively, you can select an existing element and change its workset assignment in the Properties panel.
There are many other advantages to using the six available worksets, which we won’t cover in detail here. However, one crucial tip is to set up your worksets before starting your project. This preparation greatly simplifies later tasks such as comprehensive model coordination and clash detection. Without proper workset organization, these processes can become very complicated.
Take it from experience—make sure to establish your worksets early on. It will save you a lot of time and hassle down the road.
