BIM Q&A | Is the Revit Family Library Universal?
Can Revit 2018 use the family library from Revit 2014?
Revit versions are generally backward compatible when it comes to family files: newer versions can open families created in older versions, but older versions cannot open families created in newer versions.
For example, if you are using Revit 2018, you can open families created in versions from 2014 to 2018. However, families created in Revit 2019 or later will not be accessible. Sometimes, it can be challenging to differentiate between local families.
To address this, a colleague recommended using the Revit Component Dock plugin. This tool automatically filters and displays only the families compatible with the version of Revit you are currently using, making this compatibility issue much easier to manage moving forward.
