BIM Q&A | Why Can’t Families Be Selected When Loading Into a Project in Revit 2017?
I’m not sure which family you are trying to load or what error message appears if the family won’t load. In my case, I’m using a family file that loads successfully, and once loaded, it appears in the Project Browser on the left. The image below shows an example of a family file I loaded randomly.
Method
For example, if you want to create a pile foundation, you might notice that there is no pile option available in the software’s menu bar, as shown in the screenshot. You could opt to use other components such as columns instead. However, in this guide, I’ll show you how to model pipe piles by loading the appropriate family files.
First, click the Load Family button located in the Insert tab.
Next, in the dialog box that appears, navigate to Structure > Foundation > Pile Concrete Circular Pile, and select it to complete the loading process of the pipe pile family.
Once loading is complete, go to the Structure tab, click on the component, and select Place Component from the dropdown menu.
Then, adjust the component properties in the Properties panel to fit your required style, and begin modeling and drawing the pipe pile.
The completed 3D model of the pile foundation looks like the image shown below.
Precautions
Be sure to carefully calculate the elevation offsets when drawing pipe piles to ensure that the model data accurately matches the design drawings.
